Our family calls it the Happy Shiba Smile. Our 8 yr old girl , Tori, always smiles when she gets to her favorite park, Hopkinton State Park, in MA. We rarely see a Shiba in our area of the west suburbs of Boston. Our breeder, Cheri Sullo, repeatedly told us to constantly socialize our 7 week old pup with people of all ages and dogs of all sizes. She was right! Our Shiba loves to socialize and if I don’t get her out enough then she gets depressed and will show it by unintentionally having what the Vet calls Stress Induced Incontinance. That means, ocassionally, she leaks urine. It’ll also happen after we’ve just returned home after walking her for 2 hours and I’ll see little wet droplets on the floor where she had just walked…so annoying. Giving her tiny pieces of dried cranberries, in her favorite creamy peanut butter, helps the Incontinance. Thanks for sharing your Shiba blog. how do your guys do with rawhides? ours never have a problem, but whenever i post a photo of them eating one i always get the “isn’t that dangerous” comment…
When the rawhide gets to a small size, we monitor them very carefully so that they don’t try to swallow a big piece without chewing. Otherwise, they are fine and enjoy the teeth exercise very much.
Hello! We are expecting to bring home a Shiba puppy in august this year, and I plan to take a lot of pictures of our dog. I think you take lovely pictures of the dogs, and I wondered if you have any recommendations for me – I want to buy a new lens for my old camera, a Canon 450D. I want a lens that can take “sport” pictures without depending on bright daylight (if that’s possible, in norway only a few summer days are sunny:/ ).
I also plan on buying a 50mm lens, and the 1.8 is a lot cheaper than the 1.4. Do you know if it’s a big difference there?

It normally takes Kaiju about a day and half to feel comfortable enough to come down from a couch or a bed (whatever he chooses to perch on when we go to those new places). Free running in the enclosed yard may help…
I think Shio, Emi and Kaiju should go play together. I bet they will have so much fun!!

Your site has the most amazing pictures. Looks like they had an awesome time and what a fun relaxing getaway for all of you! Good job finding a cabin that has a fenced in yard too. Your trip has inspired us to look into Blue Ridge Mountains (Georgia, ~2 hrs from us), seems similar with cabins, lakes, trails, small antiquey stores, homemade pies, but we have yet to find one with a fenced in yard. 
It took just two hours from the boroughs? Wow, you guys made great time! Upstate NY is gorgeous. Just as beautiful: Shio and Emi still smitten with each other.
