Shio at Prospect Park

Now that we have finally settled down, Shio has made his return to Prospect Park. Shio is much happier in the open field vs. the dog run. Lately, he has been prone to getting angry and fighting with other dogs at the nearby dog-run. Check out the little bit of treat left on Shio’s tongue!…

the last picture of shio just made me yawn too.
happy to hear that he got to return to the familiar park!

I was just wondering, is Prospect Park fenced? We’re not New Yorkers obviously. Is Shio so well trained he can be off leash? Is that allowed in NY parks that aren’t dog parks?

We’re too scared to let our shiba off leash ever. He’s only 18 months and we have a while to go with training!

Thanks for sharing Shio!

Prospect Park is not fenced, but it is a relatively enclosed park in the sense that Shio can’t run into roads with cars easily.

When we first let Shio off leash, we did it in enclosed areas always, working on his recall. And then we went to the park with his friends (two wheatens that were very good with recall), and he would stay with his pack and so we were again to gain more confidence.

Shio is also very treat-motivated, and so having a bag of good snacks with us helps a lot.

One thing to try may be a very very long leash so your shiba can wander off. And then you can test him / her. Also, even if you let the leash go, it’s easier to catch a long leash that is dragging on the ground…

GOOD LUCK!!
